Seasons

In January of 2007 I started a visual project. The concept was to use a digital camera to record images of seasonal change. I wanted the series to be more then a conventional documentation. My intent was for it to be an exploration.

To achieve this goal I experimented with a variety of editing softwares. Color, pattern, focus, lighting, exposure, format, and composition would all be subject to digital manipulation. One reason for the manipulation was to create a heightened emotional level in the imagery. By shifting the levels of the various compositional elements I could channel the "feel" of the image.

The first group of images were of the winter. It was early in the project. While I had a general idea of the direction I wanted to go there was little certainty and no absolutes. Equiped with a Samsung Digimax L60 camera I began to explore the January landscape.

At this point I'd like to say that the area of my focus was within 50 miles of my home in Kirkland, Washington, U.S.A.. While I live in a suburb of Seattle there are numerous natural areas close to my home. It is in those areas where I found my subject matter. The stark quality of winter was quite obious. As I absorbed my surroundings I noticed the tenacity of life. Despite the cold and prolonged periods of darkness there were pockets of color. Barren branches could at any moment become alive with a group of blackbirds or sparrows who could fly off as quickly as they arrived.  As early as mid January I discovered small blossoms. After photographing these events I wanted to instill into the final images some of the emotion that I felt.
